Canadian speaker brand PSB has taken the covers (geddit?) off the iQ series, a new range of wireless bookshelf speakers that it claims will simplify life for those on the hunt for high-quality sound, by combining streaming, amplification and connectivity into an all-in-one package.

Initially comprising two ported models – the £899 iQ1 and £1,199 iQ2 – the new range is an evolution  of the company’s Alpha iQ streaming powered speakers (launched in 2022), but now featuring new TI Burr-Brown Class D amplification, fabric grilles, and a wider range of finishes.

The more affordable iQ1 uses a hard-wired connection between the the master and slave speakers, while the step-up iQ2 offers fully wireless connectivity between its two. Opt for the cheaper model and you get a choice of either black or white vinyl; go for the iQ2 and you can take pick from seven finishes including four totally new ones – Ember Red, Boreal Green, Granite Grey and Sandstone Beige.

Both the iQ1 and iQ2 use the same 4-inch polypropylene mid-bass driver, each driven by individual amplifiers.  Where they differ is that the iQ1 powers both its 0.75in dome tweeters from a single two-channel amp, while the iQ2’s get a separate amplifier each.

Streaming, meanwhile, is handled by the tried and tested BlueOS system. As well as allowing the expected access to music streaming services, along with your network-attached music libraries, BlueOS also lets you pair the iQ with other BlueOS-equipped speakers and systems, if multi-room audio is your thing. Connectivity covers all the key bases, catering for Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, and Bluetooth with aptX.

The £1,199 iQ2 is available now (a walnut finish version arrives in November for £1,299), while the iQ1 will be in the shops from mid-August.
