JBL has launched a new range of Cinema SB MK2 soundbars that could make upgrading your TV sound considerably less costly. The headline feature is JBL’s new SurroundPlay technology, which allows compatible JBL portable speakers to be used wirelessly as rear surround channels.

That means if you already own a pair of compatible JBL speakers, you may not need to buy a separate set of dedicated rear speakers to create a more convincing sounding home cinema setup.

The new range comprises four models, with JBL targeting everything from straightforward TV sound upgrades to more serious Dolby Atmos home cinema systems. All the models promise to deliver clearer dialogue and more powerful bass, while keeping setup and operation relatively simple.

‘SurroundPlay’ is the ‘magic’ bit. With compatible portable Bluetooth speakers connected, a press of a button turns them into rear surround channels, creating a more immersive presentation.

It is a potentially useful approach for anyone who has already invested in JBL’s portable speaker ecosystem. Rather than leaving those speakers sitting on a shelf when you’re watching a movie, they can become part of the home cinema system.

It’s not an entirely new idea – the older JBL Charge 5 wi-fi model could also apparently be used as a rear surround speakers with certain older soundbars.

But there is one snag with the new arrangement, namely that the only JBL Bluetooth speaker that currently can be partnered with the new soundbars is the (excellent), but relatively recent Flip 7.

In the longer term, however, JBL says more of its future portable range will align with this function, so a greater number of alternatives should become available.

The flagship of new range is the 3.1.2-channel JBL Cinema SB595MK2, which delivers 440W of power and comes with a wireless 6.5-inch subwoofer. Two up-firing drivers are used to create JBL’s True Dolby Atmos experience, adding perceived height, as well as width, to the soundstage.

The 3.1-channel SB580MK2 offers an identical specification to the flagship, bar the fact it doesn’t have separate, upfiring Dolby Atmos drive units built-in.

Step down to the 3.1-channel, non-Atmos SB550MK2 and you lose eARC connectivity (there’s just plain ‘ARC’), the sub shrinks to a 5.25in job, and the power output drops to 360W.

Finally, the 3.1-channel SB510MK2 takes the simplest approach. Its all-in-one design incorporates a built-in subwoofer and delivers 200W of audio.

The new range becomes available from the beginning of October with UK pricing as shown: SB595MK2 (£349.99), SB580MK2 (£299.99), SB550MK2 (£199.99) and SB510MK2 (£159.99).
